ALL THAT just to get some gamming keyboard suggestions I presently use a microsoft sidewinder
That system dump is overkill for this 😄. The useful bit is: you’re on Linux Mint and you’ve been happy with a Microsoft SideWinder X4, so I’d prioritize full-size boards with dedicated media controls, macro keys, and good Linux behavior rather than chasing flashy “esports” models.
Yep — you gave me the PC equivalent of a full medical history just to say “recommend me a keyboard.” 😂
Your SideWinder X4 actually tells me something useful, though: you’re accustomed to a full-size membrane board with 6 macro keys, media controls, backlighting, and unusually good anti-ghosting. Microsoft’s X4 could report up to 26 simultaneous keys, so some cheap modern “gaming” membrane boards are surprisingly a downgrade. (www.microsoft.com news.microsoft.com)
1. Corsair K55 RGB PRO — closest SideWinder X4 replacement
$49.99
This is the obvious choice if you basically want “my SideWinder, but newer.” It has rubber-dome/membrane keys, six dedicated macro keys, media controls, a wrist rest, RGB, and a normal full-size layout. (www.corsair.com)
The one catch: its rollover is only 12-key selective anti-ghosting, versus the X4's unusually capable implementation. (www.corsair.com www.microsoft.com)
On Linux Mint, normal keyboard operation is straightforward, and community tools such as ckb-next/OpenRGB can handle much of the extra Corsair functionality. (plugandtux.com)
I'd pick this if you like the actual soft/quieter feel of your SideWinder.
2. Keychron V6 Max — my pick for your Linux machine
$156.41
This would be my choice if you're ready to move from membrane to mechanical. It's 100% full-size, has proper N-key rollover, hot-swappable switches, 1000 Hz 2.4 GHz wireless, Bluetooth and USB, and—most importantly for you—Keychron explicitly supports configuration on Linux through QMK/Keychron Launcher. (www.keychron.com)
The fully assembled model is currently around $118 direct from Keychron. (www.keychron.com)
Downside: no six-key macro column on the left. You can program macros/remaps through QMK, but if you've developed muscle memory for those S1–S6 SideWinder keys, you'll notice their absence.
For someone coming from the X4, I'd choose Gateron Jupiter Red switches if you mainly game and don't want a big tactile bump. Brown if you type a lot too.
There is also a newer wired V6 8K for $84.99 if wireless doesn't matter; it pushes polling to 8 kHz. (www.keychron.com www.keychron.com)
3. Razer BlackWidow V4 Pro — the ridiculous modern SideWinder
$229.99
If what you liked about the SideWinder was buttons everywhere, this is the fun one.
Full-size mechanical, 8 dedicated macro controls, command dial, four media buttons plus media roller, wrist rest, N-key rollover, up to 8 kHz polling, and five onboard profiles. (mysupport.razer.com www.razer.com)
And importantly, OpenRazer lists the BlackWidow V4 Pro as supported on Linux. (github.laiyagushi.com openrazer.github.io)
I'd still consider its Linux software experience less seamless than Keychron/QMK—the official Razer Synapse configuration stack remains the Windows-centric part of the experience. But basic operation and Linux-side RGB control have community support.
My ranking would be:
K55 RGB PRO → if you want the SideWinder X4 experience again for roughly $50–70.
Keychron V6 Max / V6 8K → best overall recommendation. Better keyboard hardware, excellent Linux friendliness, full NKRO, replaceable switches, and you aren't paying for Windows-only software.
BlackWidow V4 Pro → if those dedicated macro buttons are genuinely important and you're willing to spend ~$200+.
One funny thing: don't throw that SideWinder X4 away just because it's old. Its anti-ghosting implementation was genuinely sophisticated, even by current keyboard standards. (www.microsoft.com)
If I were spending your money, I'd go Keychron V6 8K with linear/red switches and keep the SideWinder as the backup.
